About This Portfolio

The photographer’s family came from Eastern Europe in the great post–WWI migration, spent two generations on the East Coast, and moved west to California in the 1960s. California exists past the Rocky Mountains, the great salt plains and the bone-dry deserts — but before the Pacific Ocean. It is the Far West: a physical place, and also a self-created mythical place that exists in books and in cinema. These photographs show the traces of a real history — at preserved original sites and where this past has remained or been incorporated into modern life: Spanish missions and adobes, Gold Country saloons, ranches, riverboats, and cemeteries that tell tales of woe.

The photographs are not meant to be a formal documentary, but rather an impressionistic creation of California as the Far West. These images are a lament to the passing of time, the passing of an era, and the passing of the dynamic peoples who lived, thrived, loved, and eventually built the world we live in today.

All images are digital capture made with Sony mirrorless cameras using fixed legacy lenses from 1952–2005, several custom adapted for this purpose. All prints are archival pigment on rag papers.
