L’Histoire Perdue

This project examines the influence of the French colonial period in Indochina by focusing on the remaining infrastructure, architecture, and cultural elements. There is a particular emphasis on prisons and churches. The images were made in Vietnam between 2007 and 2011, using tools and materials similar to the period of history they seek to portray.

The full series runs 120 images deep · Exhibited at the Alliance Française, San Francisco, 2018; Smith Anderson Gallery, San Anselmo, 2015

About This Portfolio

Vietnam & France: L’Histoire Perdue examines the influence of the French colonial period in Indochina through its remaining infrastructure and architecture — prisons, churches, theatres, railways, and grand hotels. The full series runs 120 images deep, and the artist hopes to publish it as a book, possibly in France.

All photographs were made on 120mm Ilford and Kodak films, often with vintage lenses from 1930–1970. The cameras: a modified Linhof 4×5 view camera shooting 6×7 on roll film (Stopped Clock, Haiphong), a Hasselblad shooting 6×6 (Dancing Ladders), a Voigtländer Bessa II shooting 6×9 (Long Bien Bridge, Hanoi), and an Agfa Super Isolette 6×6 (Kee Ga Lighthouse Stairs).

All prints are hand-made, selenium-toned silver gelatin fiber prints on semi-matte neutral or warm-toned paper, developed and printed by the artist, with most printed within a year or two of capture. A few images that were too high in contrast, underexposed, or unprinted at the time were later scanned and printed as archival pigment prints on rag papers.

Almost all prints are available at 16×20 (exhibition size) as well as 11×14. As was the standard at the time, most prints were editioned at 30 or 45; as the artist has finished with silver/darkroom printing, each print is being re-editioned to the actual number made — between 6 and 20 prints — and no further silver prints will be made from these negatives.

All images are available for purchase · prices range from $500 to $1,500 depending on size and edition · inquire or call 415-509-5388
